Dynamic Resource Management in Virtualized Environments through Virtual Server Relocation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Virtualization has become an essential technology in the data center. Virtualization improves resource utilization through server consolidation, but it also makes resource management more complex. Golondrina, an autonomic resource management system, was built to use virtual server relocation to handle resource stress situations, that is, situations where the combined resource needs of the virtual servers hosted in a physical machine exceed the resource availability. Experimental evaluation shows that replication offers improvements over migration, and both mechanisms offer improvements over taking no action upon detection of a CPU stress situation. The main contribution of this work is the introduction of virtual server replication as an alternative to migration and the experimental comparison of both mechanisms. The primary motivation for enterprises to adopt virtualization technologies is to create a more agile and dynamic IT infrastructure — with server consolidation, high resource utilization, the ability to quickly add and adjust capacity on demand — while lowering total cost of ownership and responding more effectively to changing business conditions. However, effective management of virtualized I...

In the last decade, Cloud Computing has become a disruptive force in the computing landscape, changing the way in which software is designed, deployed and used over the world. Its adoption has been substantial and it is only expected to continue growing. The growth of this new model is supported by the proliferation of large-scale data centres, built for the express purpose of hosting cloud wor...

Increasing management costs with large servers have caused adoption of a technique called Server Virtualization whereby multiple virtual machines can be hosted on the same physical machine. Reduction in the number of physical machines and amount of rack space brings the total cost of ownership down. Virtual servers residing on the same physical machine are likely to suffer resource contention u...
متن کاملSLA_Driven Adaptive Resource Allocation for Virtualized Servers
In order to reduce cost and improve efficiency, many data centers adopt virtualization solutions. The advent of virtualization allows multiple virtual machines hosted on a single physical server. However, this poses new challenges for resource management. Web workloads which are dominant in data centers are known to vary dynamically with time. In order to meet application’s service level agreem...
